The forged spine reguires great skills of forging and sanding, i mean its actually hard to make it very good looking, its not that simple as you might think

I've already turned my bedroom into a machine shop and firing range, not much room left for a forge besides, jake is a great subcontractor for such needs heheinonickname wrote:You should try your hand at knives Jack

That's not an excuse Jack, with some knife designs you could do lots of the work on the mill...

Mind sharing your techniques if it's not a secret? I'd like to be able to get a nice contrast between the blade and spine while still keeping it clean..
I need to add some doors to my forge too, It has pretty large openings for its size and I think that drops it's efficiency a lot. Just takes a lot longer to heat the metal to forging temp than I'd like

Well, i do use some japanese techniques, im one of the very few people in Finland who knows the secrets in japanese metalcrafting. Everyone thinks they know it, but they dont
My friend's uncle has gaved him the information he gained from japanese mastersmith's, and he has given some of that information to me. He's old, and invalid these day's, but he has faith on me.
All i can say is train, train and more train. I have done ALOT of blade's, all of them with forged spine, the trick is to get it symmetrical. Try to use every single part of your anvil for blademaking. What kind of anvil do you have?
As soon as i get the puukko made for Mike, im starting damascu's making, ordered some 15N20 and 1% carbonsteel for it I also ordered very pure japanese high carbon steel (C 1.1-1.2 % S < 0,004 % P < 0,025 % Si = 0,1-0,2% !!!) and of course wr.12210 silversteel, enough for about 30 blade´s.
Wasn't so cheap order hehe

My anvil.. It's a erm..
I-beam
I'm planning on adding some fixtures and reinforcement to make it more effective, and to reinforce it and grind/sand the surface. Tonight I'm planning on adding the doors to the forge, it really needs them to work well.

Ahh, ok piece of railroad work's well too, anvils are kinda expensive. Heck, 50kg Lokomo anvil costs like 600€, but it's the best you can get

I have some railroad, could always add that. The I beam works well for me because it raises the hot metal away from the floor.. Australia is made of tinder so I don't need to explain why this is a good thing. I'm planning on building a stand for forge and anvil soon though to make working more comfortablejakethebeast wrote:Ahh, ok piece of railroad work's well too, anvils are kinda expensive.
