I just bought some of these:I had seen these tungsten insert for fishing but not knowing the diameter, I have not bought ...
They weigh 1.8 grams, so considering the density of tungsten and the dimensions from the picture I would say they are about 2.5mm diameter and 18.5mm long, quite tiny compared to what you've been using.

I've seen references to 18.2 g/cm<sup>3</sup> density. so that gives dimensions of about 2.6mm diameter and 28mm length, certainly these would not be as effective as the rods you're currently using - though technically they would fly out much faster.
As we've seen however, it's better to rely on slightly less velocity and more mass in order to avoid the projectile shattering.
On another note, have you ever heard of the "Blondeau" slug (balle Blondeau)?
The tail is not hollow, but apparently due to the shape it flies reasonably straight...
