My dad and i have been looking at the 17 hmr round, from what people say, they are extremly accurate , lil pricy but well worth it,
we have our eyes set on a rifle, for 200 bucks, scope will be made by varmint, ( from gndr mtn) 6 by 24 by 50, with rings and rail,
i know the scope is a lil big for the caliber, but we dont like 3 by 9s anymore,
anybody own a 17 with knowledge to maybe help here are they worth it?
Personal opinions on the marlin 17 hmr:
Brilliant round, doesn't like the wind, good out to 200 yards. If you're only shooting under 100 yards, buy a .22WMR, it's cheaper. Past 120 yards, .17HMR is king.
I use a 6x40 on a .22 out to 100 yards, and that's overpowered too, I would drop more money in a smaller scope, Bushnell Trophys are great scopes for the price.
My mate has a Marlin bolt .22, and it's a great gun, I'm getting one myself eventually, for mag compatibility.
Basically, buy the damn thing, you'll love it.

yes i do want to shoot farther distances, it is a lil pricy, but not tooo bad, that why im leaning towards it, and for small game, squirells and rabbits its a lil harsh, but coyotes and coons its perfectZeus wrote:Brilliant round, doesn't like the wind, good out to 200 yards. Another good choice is a .243 (6mm) in a bolt action.
Very good multi purpose rifle with a variety of bullet/cartridge variations.
I really enjoyed the one I had.

Good call too, I love .243. Big enough for most deer, fast enough for foxes(coyotes and varmints too I guess), not overpowered for boar, and cheap to buy.
.308 is my favourite though, can't wait to try .17 hornet too.

right now, the 17 hornet shoots at a wooping 3650 fps and the 17 hmr is 2550, these two calibers are the highest fps on the market, personally i wouldnt use a 243 for boar, i think 243 would only piss the boar off, id rather use a 35 remington 250 grains on that type of animal, thats what i hunt withZeus wrote:Good call too, I love .243. its awesome for them!
.243 not enough for pigs, fuck mate, do you use a .300 Win Mag for deer?
And there's a lot faster rounds around than .17 hornet, like most of the .204 calibres and .22-250, to name a few.
