Hey does anyone know where I could buy a working jet engine say around 150 HP? Preferably a turbojet.
Thanks

See if you can find and army surplus place, i think they may sell jet engines. Can i ask what you are going to do with a 150 hp jet engine ?

I want to make a crackbox boat, and use a jet engine vs a regualr gas engine, the power to weight ratio is a lot better.

Question: How much would such an engine cost?
How much thrust might a 150 hp have?

I dont know much about jet engines, but I do find the idea of a jet boat cool.

Well, you can get them from anywhere from 500 dollars to upwards of ten grand, depending on what you get and from who. I hope to find a small helicopter one from a government surplus sale. And by saying a 150 HP, it is the same as a gas engine having 150 HP, it uses a shaft for power hookup not the gases for thrust.

So it's not a jet engine, it's a turbine engine. Those things are hella powerful. An engine the size of a soda can can give you a ~10 HP output. Good luck finding one that's affordable.

Well depending on the status of the engine, I found one for 500 with a 250 shipping cost, but it required some slight work. So my goal is to find one under 5 grand which is around what a equivalent gas engine would cost.

Yes but they have a small selection of over priced engines. So I am not quite sure what I will do.

One problem... Jet engines, or turbine, whatever you want to call them, are super gas guzzlers. They use way more fuel than an engine with comparable power, however the good part is that they are much lighter. So, you runtime will be decreased, but you will be faster!

EDIT: I read somewhere that you can make your own jet engines with car turbos quite easily. I'm not sure where I saw that, but I bet you could find it.

EDIT: I know you don't want a pulse jet, but I think you guys will find this cool. pulse jet

I am a bit unsure of how much fuel they take in comparison with a regular combustion engine, however, a few sites online use a 160 HP helicopter engine and with a 20 gallon tank I belive they advertise an hours worth of running at full speed. So that is comparable to a gas engine at full speed. Also jet engines are more effiecient at wide open throttle, I think. And to make a simple jet engine with turbos/superchargers is easy, but produces no where near the desired HP rating. As with that pulse jet shown above, the effect is cool, but the power output is weak.

Yeah, I know that about that particular pulse jet, but you couldn't hook up a gearbox to it anyway... I just thought it was a cool effect as you said.

In fact, pulse jets have one of the best power to weight ratios, but they are infamous for horrible fuel economy. IE gas hog.

There was a guy telling our class at a fieldtrip that jet engines use a lot of fuel in comparison. And he was the "guide". For instance, there was these sprayer planes the sprayed mosquitoes, and were piston powered. They used far less fuel than the ones with turboprop engines, that sprayed crops. However, the turboprop ones were much faster and more powerful.

Haha, are you talking about the jet boat with the two air canisters and a dump valve?
